To address and provide mechanical design solutions to correct a variety of functional issues affecting the pool complex designed originally by another firm nine years ago.
- New building management system established to run from a computer system that interfaces with the Council’s amenities at the Council offices, Opera House and hospital.
- Upgrading of the pool hall ventilation to address a build up of chloramines, to create a pleasant environment for staff & public.
- New ceiling in the pool hall to improve acoustic performance.
- Construction upgrade of the entrance foyers to successfully fix the incomplete vapour barrier.
- New lighting in the pool hall.
- Identifying and rectifying roof leaks.
- Major heating and ventilation upgrade, utilising as much of the existing system as feasible, with improved energy efficiency.
- Spa pool heating system upgrade.
LHTDesign’s mechanical design team surveyed the entire site to develop full plans of the heating and ventilation system in particular as limited information was available. From this understanding of what was involved, and what aspects could be utilised, a new design was created with a view to maximise energy efficiency.
A new heat pump was designed with a co-efficient performance of just under 5:1. The existing heat sink was incorporated. A new additional heat recovery runaround coil system was installed with a coefficient performance of 80 to 1. With its minimal running cost, Council has been able to significantly reduce its power consumption cost.
A small gas boiler was installed for the spa pool heating as part of the holistic energy reduction strategy. While an air to air heat exchanger was added to the amenities area to recover waste heat.
The complete mechanical system has been commissioned to completely balance the water system and air ducting. The BMS computer control system has been commissioned and tuned, and provides additional functions including trending and fault reporting.
The Council has also been provided with As-built layout and schematic plans so that all systems are fully recorded and available for ongoing reference.
The $1.5M upgrade was completed within a very tight four-week closure period over April and into May 2009.
Waitaki District Council is delighted with the outcome, not just with the upgraded facility but with the ongoing energy reduction costs that will benefit its ratepayers for years to come.
