Alpine Aqualand, Queenstown


BRIEF
To design a modern indoor aquatic centre for the Queenstown Lakes District Council operating in conjunction with the existing Events Centre and sized to cater for a future town population of 50,000.

The building and plant to be energy efficient and minimise environmental impacts.  An iconic building themed inside to reflect the alpine and lake environment of the area - natural, healthy, clean, mountains, lakes, rivers.

SWIMMING POOL DESIGN PROJECT OUTLINE

  • 25m deep-end pool with eight 2.5m lanes and access ramp.
  • 200 bleacher seats.
  • Large leisure pool with many features including a lazy river, bubbles, spouts and waterfall to a toddlers’ pool.
  • Large spa pool.
  • Purpose designed learners’ pool in a separate room.
  • Two hydroslides starting from a ‘mountain’.
  • Internal theme inspired by the local geology and visual impact of the Remarkables Range.
  • Iconic building formed of segments evoking tilted tectonic plates.
  • Health and fitness area.
  • Large new foyer and circulation space linking and controlling access to the Events Centre and aquatic centre.
  • Acoustic ceilings.
  • Dynamic lighting.
  • Water treatment systems including UV to provide attractive internal conditions.
  • Energy efficient heating and ventilation.
  • Myrtha Pool technology.
  • Art works incorporated into the design.

LHTDESIGN’S SCOPE OF WORKS
LHTDesign was the Principal Consultant for this $17.8M project and led the design team including ASC Architects and LDP Ltd.  LHTDesign controlled and co-ordinated the design and had particular responsibility for civil and structural engineering, fire safety, pool design, water quality, heating and ventilation design.

OUTCOME
LHTDesign is proud to be associated with this truly unique pool whose design incorporated the latest in materials and design techniques.
Alpine Aqualand was opened in May 2008 and has quickly proved to be a popular leisure centre with locals and tourist alike.
