To completely re-build the historic geothermal pools and create a modern swimming and leisure complex of top standard that would cater for both community and visitors. To match the standards of the new Events Centre to which it was attached and provide a top class venue for aquatic events.
- New indoor eight lane 25m x 2m deep pool to complement the existing outdoor shallow six lane 25m pool and provide for all competition, training and fitness needs.
- 400 bleacher seats plus provision for temporary seating around the 25m pool.
- Very large indoor/outdoor leisure pool with waterfalls to toddlers' pools, jets to the channels from inside to out, islands, alcoves with massage jets, features, etc.
- Learners' pool with varying depth in a separate space.
- Nine private mineral pools.
- Extensive landscaping both inside and out.
- Two seamless tube hydroslides finishing in chutes.
- Architecturally designed buildings in sympathy with the modern Events Centre building.
- Acoustic ceilings.
- Cafeteria and kitchen with outdoor servery.
- Precast concrete columns and laminated timber rafters.
- Myrtha technology for all except the mineral pools.
- Vacuum DE filters, hypochlorination.
- Geothermal heat with some heat recovery.
As principal consultants for this $7.5M swimming pool project, LHTDesign led the design team (including ASC Architects, John Loughnan Mechanical Engineer and Premier Consultants) and controlled and coordinated the development of the concept through to completion of the documentation and tendering.
LHTDesign also had particular responsibility for civil and structural engineering, fire safety, hydraulics, and water quality.
The client provided project management services and administered the building contract.
The swimming pool project was opened in May 2003 and has quickly proved to be a popular leisure option for both locals and tourists alike.
