Golden Del Coolstore and CA Store, Hastings

BRIEF
To provide a state-of-the-art storage facility for export apples that provides flexibility to use the coolstore option for apples processed for immediate export, or the Controlled Atmosphere (CA) store for apples destined for last-container departure from New Zealand.
To ensure a completed deadline of six months, including the consent process, was met.

POST HARVEST BUILDING DESIGN PROJECT OUTLINE

COOLSTORE:

  • Large space housing in excess of 100,000 cartons.
  • Part-height panels to protect the walls.
  • Polypanel walls and roof to maintain appropriate temperature.
  • Minimal joints in the concrete floors.
  • Refrigerated loading dock for expedient release of apples to the port.

CA STORE:

  • 2000sq m.
  • Six rooms with future scope for four more rooms.
  • Full-height concrete wall panels and concrete roof to improve efficiency.
  • Provision for state-of-the-art CA and refrigeration gear.
  • Clear-span mezzanine floor to house mechanical gear and monitoring space.
  • Joint-free CA floors.
  • State-of-the-art bandaging and CA doors to provide gas-tight stores.

COOLSTORE 2:

  • Large space exceeding 3200sq m.
  • Full height insulated sandwich precast panels for durability and thermal efficiency.
  • PIR panel roof and doors.

LHTDESIGN’S SCOPE OF WORKS
As part of a multi-firm design team, LHTDesign obtained building and resource consents and worked closely with the subcontractors to meet the tight timelines set by the client.

OUTCOME
The client was delighted that benefits afforded from the latest in technology was not compromised by the tightness of the deadline.  The facility has proved itself more than capable of meeting the growing needs of the pipfruit export industry.
