Cook Islands Courthouse, Rarotonga

BRIEF
To prepare initial concept designs for a new Courthouse in Rarotonga and then represent the Cook Island Government during the detailed design and project construction aspects undertaken by the Republic of China as funders of the project.

COMMERCIAL BUILDING DESIGN PROJECT OUTLINE

  • The purpose-designed building, funded and built by the Republic of China, replaces the previous sub-standard courtrooms that leaked, had no windows, competed with the noise of adjacent refrigerated containers, and resembled a sauna during the hot months.
  • It now includes two courtrooms, legal chambers, ministerial offices and administration offices.
  • All of the spaces were fully fitted out as part of the project.
  • The building is elevated to avoid damage from storm sea surge but at the same time strong enough to resist cyclonic winds.
  • Air conditioned throughout.
  • Modern communications and data systems throughout.
  • Undercover carparking.

LHTDESIGN’S SCOPE OF WORKS
With its 12-year association with Cook Island government and businesses, LHTDesign was asked to provide initial concept designs to assist the Chinese in developing final plans that incorporated the key elements sought by the Cook Island administrators.

LHTDesign director Alan Thompson then liaised with the Chinese team on behalf of the Cook Island government to ensure local building standards were met as nearly as possible and to monitor construction progress.

LHTDesign assisted with the fit-out planning.

OUTCOME
Cook Island government and court officials, the High Court judiciary, legal profession and allied personnel are delighted with the new $4.8M commercial building and the improved working conditions it provides.
