To create a modern pelt processing plant through the conversion of an existing redundant freezing works plant in Whakatu. This project was commissioned in 2002.
In late 2003, a subsequent project was commissioned to create a two-bay extension to the pelt spinning drums area, and to address noise and emission control issues.
- Pelt processing on the ground floor incorporating the use of wooden drums to spin the pelts.
- Wool handling facilities and administration offices on first floor.
- Use of very durable materials was a key issue due to the highly corrosive nature of the process – both acidic and alkaline.
LHTDesign worked in close liaison with the client Progressive Leathers, and Proand to tailor the existing building to meet the specific, exacting needs of the plant’s processing operation.
In addition to ensuring the building met the Building Code requirement of the time, LHTDesign also researched various material options to ensure durability criteria were achieved. The use of biofiller in the mezzanine was one such innovative method employed.
LHTDesign provided specialist advice and structural expertise to facilitate full design documentation and fire design engineering. Contract administration and construction monitoring was also provided including day-to-day onsite inspections. The team was also on hand to answer client queries as they arose.
The pelt processing plant opened to positive reaction from the users and continues to satisfy Progressive Leathers' needs to this day.
