Woodford House, Havelock North Dining Hall, Kitchen, Common Room, Technology Block extension and Administration Block Upgrade.
BRIEF Following on from the successful renovation of the historic school hall and refurbish of existing science rooms, LHTDesign was briefed to provide designs for numerous renovations and extensions at the private girls’ secondary school.
SCHOOL BUILDING DESIGN PROJECT OUTLINE
Dining hall – a refurbishment that increased the floor area and seating capacity while maintaining the character of the space.
Kitchen – an upgrade of the dishwashing and vegetable preparation area, food storage and serveries, plus improvements to the kitchen staff amenities. Roof strengthening was required to accommodate a new Common Room above.
Common Room – a new first floor space including a kitchenette over the dining room footprint, incorporating fire egress over the existing roofs.
Technology block – a two-storey extension that incorporated a mezzanine floor in the Art Room.
Boarding Manager’s Office – new office and glazed canopy incorporating a new exit from an existing classroom.
Chaplain’s Office – relocation of the office from the existing hall to a new position adjacent to the Chapel.
Administration block – upgrade layout designed to incorporate the sports department, uniform sales, copying facility and mail room. A new entrance canopy to the boarding house was also incorporated.
LHTDESIGN’S SCOPE OF WORKS LHTDesign worked with Gemco Construction to develop designs and cost estimates, provided full documentation for Council consents, and liaised with the client to ensure the construction had minimal impact on the ongoing educational and accommodation activities of the school.
OUTCOME Woodford House board, staff and pupils are thrilled with the improvements created to their environment and the attention to detail that has ensured the various alterations and refurbishments are in keeping with the character of the historic school.
