Lowe Family Performing Arts Centre
Lindisfarne College, Hastings

BRIEF
To develop an almost 2000 person capacity Performing Arts Centre by creating a new auditorium, linked by an atrium to an existing chapel / hall and gymnasium.

PROJECT OUTLINE

  • New 350-seat auditorium featuring state-of-the-art lighting and acoustics  (450sq m floor area and a 100sq m stage).
  • Commercial kitchen suitable for catering large events.
  • Glass-roofed atrium (150sq m floor area, 6m height) linking auditorium to existing gymnasium and chapel / hall.
  • While linked by the atrium, each area can be used individually, for separate events.
  • Both the chapel / hall and the gymnasium have capacity to seat 550 people.
  • Architecture is in keeping with adjacent buildings within the historic boys’ school.
  • The design enables exacting acoustic parameters to be achieved to meet both users’ and neighbours’ needs.

LHTDESIGN’S SCOPE OF WORKS
LHTDesign worked as the only Hawke’s Bay-based member of a multi-disciplinary design team with responsibility for structural design and a complete fire design for the Performing Arts Centre.

We also supervised construction of the project which took 15 months to complete.

OUTCOME
The $5.3M Lowe Family Performing Arts Centre was officially opened in May 2009.  Parents, teachers, staff and Board are thrilled with the opportunity to enjoy visits from other groups and to present their own performances.

The Centre is available for hire by conference and performance organisers and is viewed as an asset for the Hawke’s Bay community.
