BRIEF
To provide structural design for the extensive alterations and additions to the Technology Block and the Administration Block of Hawke’s Bay’s largest co-ed secondary school.

SCHOOL BUILDING DESIGN PROJECT OUTLINE

• 700sq m addition to the Technology Block enclosing existing courtyard and comprising state-of-the-art design rooms, general technology room, and providing staff resource and work space, plus offices.
• 1150sq m upgrade and alteration of outdated existing Technology Block facilities to become a leading edge facility comprising art and craft rooms, hard material workshops, food technology suite, and textiles and soft materials room.
• Administration Block alterations to obtain a more functional use of space as well as a new canopy to provide a strong visual presence and obvious entrance to the Administrative Offices of the school.

LHTDESIGN’S SCOPE OF WORKS
LHTDesign worked closely with the principal consultant, Judd Fenwick Team Architecture to achieve the brief by developing and maximising a functional cost-effective building, and providing creative solutions to problems encountered working with existing structures.

LHTDesign provided structural documentation for Building Consent purposes and was involved in construction supervision.

OUTCOME
Both the new Technology Block and the Administration Block have been positively received with good reviews from the Board of Trustees, staff and students alike.

The projects were finished within time and the revised cost expectations, as a result of the consistent effort put in by the project team.

Judd Fenwick Team Architecture won the NZIA Colour Award for the Technology Block.
