Head Office Refurbishment, Hastings

BRIEF
To provide civil, structural, fire safety and mechanical engineering support to the Unison project team responsible for the refurbishment of the Unison head office, Hastings.

The project team included LHTDesign, Fat Parrot Architecture, David Richards Quantity Surveyors, Mackersey Construction and LDP Visual Planners.

COMMERCIAL BUILDING DESIGN PROJECT OUTLINE
The project involved the complete overhaul of the 1980’s Unison building, including internal and external aspects.
The Unison board were seeking to completely transform the face of the building to reflect their commitment to the Hawke’s Bay region, and their intention to be at the leading edge of technology.
Significant internal alterations were proposed so as to allow for maximum utilisation of the available space.

LHTDESIGN’S SCOPE OF WORKS
Mechanical Services: to design a specialist air conditioning system for the IT server room, with run and standby duty, the addition of standby air conditioning plant to critical operation spaces, and the rationalization and addition to the existing air conditioning and ventilation systems throughout the office

Fire Safety: the protection of computer server spaces by gas suppression systems supplemented by an automatic fire alarm system throughout the building. The reuse of existing components was maximised, and practical cost-efficient measures were introduced to ensure the safety of occupants.

Civil Works: stormwater design included the use of car parking areas as detention ponds to reduce the impact of peak runoff flows.

Structural Design: the removal of numerous walls and inclusion of replacement supports.

OUTCOME
The completed building was handed over to Unison in December 2010, on target of $3M and on time.
