Old Fire Station Redevelopment, Hastings

BRIEF
To develop a new commercial building over three stages, that incorporated the internal core and front facade of the former Hastings Fire Station built in the 1930s as the central focal point of the site.

COMMERCIAL BUILDING DESIGN PROJECT OUTLINE

  • Stage One - a two-storey building (Staples Rodway House) occupied by two tenancies in early 2006.
  • Stage Two - refitting of the station house decommissioned in 1960. The timber additions to this building have been removed leaving a very solid concrete three bay core, with a rimu timber floored second storey above.  The strong Art Deco columns in the front facade have been replicated at the rear of this section so the car park entrance is as architecturally strong.
  • Stage Three – a two-storey L shaped wing that mirror images Stage One, on the southern side of the fire station.
  • The building has a third part-floor that houses air conditioning and other plant.
  • The new building spans a full Hastings City block (4500sq m) and is the largest commercial development in Hawke’s Bay since the 1970s.  Its architecture complements and frames the iconic fire station structure.

LHTDESIGN’S SCOPE OF WORK
LHTDesign had extensive liaison with Mackersey Development, Opus Hawke’s Bay and Mackersey Construction during the development of this $6M project to ensure construction execution was simple, effective and fast.

LHTDesign had particular responsibility for structural design, fire design and construction monitoring, it also undertook design of the yard and overseeing of site works.

Of particular note was LHTDesign’s role in assessing the former fire station building for possible strengthening requirements necessary to meet latest code specifications.

OUTCOME
The first tenants took occupancy in January 2006 and were delighted with the effectiveness of the working space and its attractive aesthetics.

Civic and business leaders alike have applauded the retention of the historic fire station building.
