Initially to design a simple low-cost building that could be developed into a Scottish-themed restaurant and whisky tasting facility. While the brief grew throughout the design stage to increase the restaurant capacity and to set a higher standard of finish, the initial concept of a simple “rural” building with good indoor / outdoor flow remained.
- 450sq m building including 225sq m dining area that can be divided for smaller functions, high standard commercial kitchen, entry foyer, and whisky tasting area, administration and amenities.
- Covered outdoor eating areas.
- 200m on-site access road and 45-space carpark.
- Incorporation of existing on-site accommodation cottages.
LHTDesign and Gemco Construction Limited worked together to develop initial design concepts, project budget and construction timeline.
LHTDesign organised the Resource Consent application, engaging Planned Solutions, Traffic Design Group, and Agfirst.
The firm provided full design including architectural, structural, heating, ventilation and air conditioning and civil engineering services. Consultants were engaged to assist with acoustic and electrical facets, and the kitchen requirements. The clients arranged the interior and landscape designers.
LHTDesign also provided construction monitoring as required. The project construction was monitored by Gemco and the client.
Glen Etive owner Kathleen Wright is “absolutely delighted” with the finished restaurant and has been inundated with bookings for meals, weddings and functions since opening in late February 2007.
The feedback for the unique design has been “fantastic” with clients making a point to comment on the excellent acoustics, and the dramatic window wall facing out to the iconic Te Mata Peak.
The restaurant’s ability to be partitioned for smaller functions, and for diners to be seated outdoors but under shade, were also proving to be significant drawcards.
