To provide ventilation and extraction systems for specific amenities in a growing number of Ryman Healthcare facilities being built throughout New Zealand including Edmund Hillary Retirement Village, Auckland; Anthony Wilding Retirement Village, Aidanfield, Christchurch; Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village, Nelson; and Julia Wallace Retirement Village, Palmerston North.
- Atriums within apartment complexes – smoke extraction systems required for fully-glazed two-storey rectangular atrium from which main entry doors to individual apartments open – from the ground floor and from a continuous walkway for first floor residents.
- Ventilation systems for the internal chapels, libraries, movie theatres, offices, nurses’ stations and communal dining areas.
- Ventilation and extraction systems for the commercial kitchens and laundry rooms, plus hair salons.
- Ventilation and extraction and humidity control systems for the indoor pools and gymnasiums.
LHTDesign worked to fire engineer specifications to develop the respective smoke extraction systems for the various facilities.
In particular, the atrium posed specific challenges to ensure that the negative pressure generated by the smoke extract fans working in the fully-enclosed space, did not restrict the apartment doors from opening to provide egress and did not exceed maximum door opening forces.
LHTDesign developed the heating and ventilation systems for the other areas to meet the client’s brief.
In addition to fulfilling the requirements of the initial brief, LHTDesign also identified additional areas that required work to meet the building code and covered this in the necessary documentation. By doing so, we helped ensure the project was not delayed and timelines could be maintained.
