The expression ‘a whole is more than a sum of its parts’ is surely the case with regard to the recently completed HB Opera House renovation and expansion.
Taking over five years, this ambitious $15M project saw the rejuvenation of the historic Hastings Opera House, and the modernisation of the former Municipal buildings that included the iconic Assembly ballroom, and its full integration into what is now a ‘purpose-built’ function centre for the city.
The project also involved transforming the rest of the city block into a new three-storey glass-fronted foyer and entrance way to the Opera House, with retail areas opening onto an internal plaza, with adjacent commercial kitchen and cafe.
And finally, perhaps the piece de resistance, a retractable roof to cover the plaza, ensuring its year-round suitability as a dining and entertainment space.
The innovative roof is one of the first of its kind in New Zealand and LHTDesign played a significant role in its design and development.
And just as the new HB Opera House complex is now a truly versatile, multi-functional and beautiful cultural amenity for the people of Hawke’s Bay – a whole far greater than its individual components, the same can also be said for the project team.
LHTDesign is extremely proud to have worked as part of the multi-discipline team of construction professionals on this rewarding project.
In particular, with the retractable roof we acknowledge the collaborative and cooperative efforts of Shand Shelton Architects and Project Managers, Patton Engineering and Morgan Builders – together as a team we have created a truly stunning asset for our region.
